The fun way to introduce children to the wonderful world of classical music…
Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra
is one of the leading orchestras in the UK. Its FUNomusica Family Concert series launched April 2009, and have since become a firmly established highlight of the Orchestra schedule.
We went along to the sell-out Summon the Superheroes family concert, in the beautiful Oxford Town hall. When I saw the superheroes theme, I knew it would be popular and my little man would enjoy it.
Pre-concert activities start at 2pm with a great selection for children (aged 4–8 years old) to relish. All the tables were very popular and were surrounded by kiddies. There was a good choice of superhero themed activities to keep the little ones entertained in the hours run up to the concert. In addition to the creative tables, budding musicians could try their hands at musical instruments including tambourines, a violin and wooden tube. I Love Funky Faces were also there offering face and body tattoos.
Keeping with the theme, these included making and decorating, superhero masks, crowns and cuffs, activity booklets and colouring. Although most of the children were dressed as superheroes, the crafts helped to complete and compliment their costumes.
A highlight for Oliver was when the concert presenter, Alasadair Malloy, and orchestra appeared dressed as a superheroes. Children were about to appreciate the orchestra sat on the floor, right at the front, where parents could join them or seating further back is provided. The classical music was wonderful and fun. It included Raiders March – John Williams, William Tell Gallop – Giacchino Rossini, The Incredibles: full mayhem – Michael Giacchino, Colours of the Wind – Alan Menken, James Bond theme – Monty Norman, Superhero – Alasdair Malloy, and Superman – John Williams. Towards the end of the performance, Alasdair had the children up dancing to the music and joining in to the actions of Superman.
We would definitely suggest getting there early. Due to the concert being popular the seats get taken quickly. Plus, it is nice for the little ones to take full advantage of all the wonderful pre-concert activities.
